Charlotte Hornets Training Camp: What’s on the line for each player
A spot in the rotation
Just like Kidd-Gilchrist, Cody Martin will enter training camp hoping to earn a rotation spot for the Charlotte Hornets. The rookie impressed with his all-around game in Summer League, and his ability to play three different positions will certainly help his case for playing time.
Martin was drafted 36th overall by Charlotte in June’s 2019 NBA Draft after another strong season at Nevada in which he averaged 12.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists. In Summer League, Martin averaged 8.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
I love Martin’s game, and think he has a legit chance to stick in the rotation throughout the season. He’s competing for minutes with guys like Malik Monk, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Devonte’ Graham, but he has shown that he is NBA ready and deserves a shot.
While I personally believe he deserves a rotation spot rather quickly, the fact is that he is a rookie and has to earn his stripes. There’s a chance that he starts the season playing in the G-League, but there’s no doubt that he will get legit playing time in the NBA at some point during his rookie season.
Many fans did not like the Martin pick when it first happened, but I think his play will change many fans’ minds. Martin is a legit NBA player and will look to show it during his first NBA training camp.
