Helped: PJ Washington

Arguably the biggest winner of preseason was Charlotte Hornets rookie PJ Washington. Going into preseason, many wondered if he’d even have a spot in the rotation to begin the 2019-20 season. Now, we’re talking about him potentially being a starter on opening night. You can’t make this stuff up!

In the five preseason games, Washington averaged 12.2 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 63 percent from the floor, 50 percent from three-point land and 82 percent from the free-throw line.

I was in favor of the Washington pick from day one, but even I didn’t see him making his NBA welcoming party so in-your-face, especially considering he is coming off a foot injury that forced him to miss Summer League play.

He showcased his ability to shoot from NBA range, put the ball on the floor, make plays and defend. He’s a modern-day NBA four that will fit right in to what the Hornets are trying to build. The future is very bright for Washington, especially if he keeps playing like he did in preseason.

Even if he doesn’t start right away for the Hornets, Washington at the very least solidified a spot in the rotation with his strong preseason outing. Considering the Hornets are in full rebuild mode, getting him significant playing time should be a priority.
