Through five games this season, the Charlotte Hornets fan attendance is currently in the bottom half of the league.

Since the Charlotte Hornets have entered a likely rebuild season, the team has seen a drop in fan attendance. After five home games, the Hornets are averaging 16,128 fans in attendance per game. The Hornets home games have only averaged 84.5% of its capacity filled so far.

Charlotte’s current amount of home fans per game is enough to have them ranked at #26 out of the entire NBA. The only teams ranked behind them are the Phoenix Suns (15,955), Minnesota Timberwolves (15,630), Atlanta Hawks (15,538), and Memphis Grizzlies (15,151).

While the Hornets are averaging low numbers this year, it isn’t much of a change from last season. After forty-one home games last season, the Hornets averaged 16,501 fans per game; this amount ranked them at #23.

The Hornets have not been within the top twenty in the league’s fan attendance since the 2016-17 season. During that season, the Hornets averaged 17,332 fans per game at home.

The Hornets saw a lot of its fan attendance during that season because of the team’s success in the 2015-16 season, which led to playoff series against the Miami Heat.

A big reason why fan attendance will contiune to drop this season is because the Hornets lost their top-two leading scorers in free agency this year. Kemba Walker was a major reason why fans filled the arena, but now the Hornets do not have a well-known star on the roster.

The Hornets currently sit at 4-6, and if the team continues to lose, then they will likely see a decrease in fan attendance. The Hornets have recently lost two straight home games, and they were against the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Charlotte Hornets have a home game coming up on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies. After two consecutive home losses, it’s hard to say what the fan attendance will be against the 30th raked team in fan attendance.
