After one of the worst losses in this young season, the Charlotte Hornets hope to get back on track when they face the Brooklyn Nets.

Losing is never fun, but when you lose by nearly 40 points, that is downright humiliating. That’s exactly what happened the last time the Charlotte Hornets (6-8) suited up. Granted, it was against the defending NBA champions, but they were quite shorthanded, so that makes the loss sting even more.

The team must move on, however, and with another tough foe looming, they’ll need to be doubly prepared. That opponent is the Brooklyn Nets (5-8). Judging by their record, one would assume that this one won’t be as tough as their last game, and with injuries to a few key players, it might not be. Still, it is a road game and there’s little reason to doubt any team in this league.

Charlotte’s last game was a 132-96 loss to the Toronto Raptors. They are 8th in the Eastern Conference. The Nets’ last contest was a 115-86 loss to the Indiana Pacers. They are right behind Charlotte, in the 9th spot. This is the first of four meetings between these two teams.

Things to watch for:

The last time Charlotte lost the season series against Brooklyn was the 2014-2015 season. If they want to keep that streak going, they’ll need to take advantage of Brooklyn’s unfortunate injuries. They still have capable players ready to go, of course, but it should be easier, in theory.

It’s been a while since the Hornets had their full arsenal of players. Hopefully, it stays that way because they need all the help they can get, especially for the next handful of games.

Keys to the game:

The Nets rank 5th in the NBA in rebounds per game and 3rd in defensive rebounds. That should come as no surprise when you have DeAndre Jordan on your team, but it’s even more worrying when Charlotte comes into this one dead last in rebounds per game. If the Hornets have one of their characteristic cold quarters, they’d do well to try and mitigate what the Nets can do on the defensive glass and try to create as many second-chance points as they can, should they throw a lot of bricks, that is.

Another interesting tidbit is that the Nets force the second-fewest turnovers per game, which is music to any Hornets fan’s ears given how turnover prone the Hornets have been much of the year. Still, that’s no reason to get careless with the ball. Ball security is a must, as always.
