Charlotte Hornets: Two crazy ideas that could help the team’s finances
The Charlotte Hornets sign LiAngelo Ball to a minimum contract
The Hornets are absolutely terrible in jersey sales. The most successful Hornets have been in jersey sales is Charlotte-alum Kemba Walker, who ranked 11th in the league for the Boston Celtics.
As far as my research tells me, no Hornets players have ranked in the top 15 in jersey sales in quite a long time. I can’t find a single Hornet that ranks in the NBA’s top 15 jersey sales and the team didn’t rank in the top third of the league for most popular team merchandise.
Adding LiAngelo Ball for talent is a long shot at best, but adding the Ball brother is certain to increase the team’s jersey and merchandise sales. The Ball brothers are a hot commodity and the media cannot get enough of the family or the brand.
Ball’s father, Lavar Ball is a genius when it comes to marketing for Big Baller Brand. Other than the brand’s hiatus following embezzlement lawsuits within the company, Big Baller Brand was getting some major traction.
The company was the sponsor for a semi-professional basketball league, NBA player Jordan Crawford was seeking sponsorship with the company and Quavo of Migos promoted the brand as an ambassador of sorts.
Adding Ball to the team would guarantee the Hornets would increase jersey sales and every time Lavar Ball goes on TV, Big Baller Brand’s sales go up.
If LaMelo Ball ends up in Charlotte then the team would have increased sales for both Ball brothers and sibling marketing could do very well. LaMelo Ball could end up with the Hornets if he falls to the number three draft pick and both LiAngelo and LaMelo could be on the roster and could do wonders for the media exposure that the team gets.
This is a low-risk high-reward situation for Charlotte. The best-case scenario is the Hornets jersey sales increase, Ball surprises the NBA and becomes efficient and the Hornets get more media exposure. The worst-case scenario is that Ball doesn’t play great but jersey sales and media exposure increases.
