Key 3: Win the Turnover Battle

Through the first three games of the season, the Charlotte Hornets average 14.3 turnovers per game. That puts the Hornets ranked the 10th best in the league, not bad for a team that was notorious for turnovers. Last year the team ranked 17th.

The problem with turnovers is that the other team gets a chance to capitalize on the miscue. Just like in any other sport, the team that wins the turnover battle is more likely to win the game. It’s as simple as that.

The Mavs come into the game only averaging 9.7 turnovers a game, landing them atop of the NBA in the least amount of turnovers committed. If the Hornets want to win this game, they are going to have to force the issue when it comes to turnovers.

In order to limit their turnovers, the Hornets are going to need to play smart basketball for the entire 48 minutes. This means smart passes, keeping their eyes up, watching the offensive fouls. There is nothing that makes you want to knock your head against a wall more than bad passes and offensive fouls.

If the Charlotte Hornets are able to implement these three keys for most, if not all of the game, they have a great shot at beating the Dallas Mavericks. It’s not going to be an easy task. The Mavs are coming off of a great game and they will look to carry that momentum against the Hornets in  Wednesday night’s game. The Hornets are riding a little bit of a momentum wave as well, so this should be a good one.
