Charlotte Hornets trades with Cavaliers: Trade for Andre Drummond

Any deal the Charlotte Hornets could make to with Cleveland Cavaliers to acquire center Andre Drummond is going to cost the Hornets big time.

Unfortunately this isn’t NBA 2K21, the Hornets can’t turn off the salary cap in order to make a deal for Drummond. Salaries have to match; the Cavaliers are over the salary cap and the Hornets only have a little under $5 million. Drummond’s salary is at $28.7 million; a trade exchanging just Cody Zeller and Malik Monk is not going to work.

Here is what I propose to bring Drummond to the Hornets:

The Cavaliers have Collin Sexton and Darius Garland, any deal the Hornets make with the Cavaliers to acquire a center will not include either Devonte’ Graham or Terry Rozier.

Because Drummond has a high salary cap number, the Hornets are going to have to attach another asset to a deal in addition to Zeller and Monk to acquire the Cavaliers’ center. I believe that the Hornets are more likely to protect PJ Washington instead of Miles Bridges, and including Bismack Biyombo in any trade is not a valuable option.

The Hornets won’t get away with not including at least one first-round draft pick in a deal for Drummond. At least the Hornets could be in a situation to get back a young talent like Kevin Porter Jr., who still has three years left on his deal and would be a good young wing to develop. Although, Porter Jr. would come with some baggage currently.

The Hornets don’t need to know if Drummond would be open to resigning with the team after this year. If he stays long-term, great. If he decides to go elsewhere, the Hornets will open up even more cap space to use this offseason to bring in a free agent or to offer extensions to their own talent.
