With their second selection in the second round, the Charlotte Hornets pick DJ Steward (Duke).

Closing out the second-round, the Charlotte Hornets could look at picking another local North Carolina kid, this one coming from Duke. While Duke has not had a successful season like last year, DJ Steward has shown promise for the Blue Devils.

With decisions coming in the future for the Hornets backcourt, Charlotte could look at adding more depth at point guard. LaMelo Ball has proved that he can be a starter, but the Hornets will need more depth if they have to move on from either Devonte’ Graham, Terry Rozier, or Malik Monk.

Steward has been a reliable option so far this season for Duke. In just 21 games, he’s averaged 12.9 points, 2.4 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game. Steward has also shot 42% from the field and 37% from three.

One of Steward’s most impressive abilities is when he explodes to the rim. His athleticism makes him a threat to opposing defenses. He has the ability to play both guard positions.

Steward is not projected to be a high draft pick so that he could fall to Charlotte later in the second round. I don’t see him coming into the league and making an immediate difference, but he could develop a lot with the Greensboro Swarm in the G League.
