Terry Rozier heads home to Boston and the Hornets gain draft capital and a backup point guard.

The Boston Celtics are having an underwhelming season. At time of writing they are 21-22, the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. More compelling is their struggling net rating compared to last season; a 0.67 adjusted net rating this season compared to a 5.86 adjusted net rating for the 2019/20 season.

The Celtics have a few areas of concern, but offense and guard depth are two of the key ones. Kemba Walker is only just beginning to rebuild his rhythm. Having an extra source of offense to relieve Walker allows him to sustain his impact deeper into the playoffs.

Terry Rozier is obviously familiar with Brad Stevens and the Celtics offensive system. Whilst on-ball decision making and movement without the ball have been issues for Rozier in dynamic situations across his Hornets tenure, he’s clearly playing a more decisive game in Borrego’s motion offense this season. I think it’d be fair to assume Rozier could pretty quickly readjust back to Stevens’ offense.

Celtics fans know that when Rozier is engaged, he can be a pretty good ball-hawk defender.

Teague and Edwards are two of the lesser impact players on the Celtics roster. Teague has a -1.12 LEBRON rating, whilst Edwards has only played 163 minutes this whole season. Both are on the outside of the Celtics rotation and project to play a very minimal role in the playoffs. Trading both for Rozier also helps the Celtics avoid the luxury tax without having to give up their more valuable young prospects such as Romeo Langford, Aaron Nesmith, and Robert Williams.
