Charlotte Hornets: Identifying the 3 biggest offseason needs
This offseason, the Charlotte Hornets finally need to address the center position
This should not come as a surprise to anybody, as the hole in the center position was a thorn in the Charlotte Hornets’ side basically all season long; for the last three seasons really.
Cody Zeller is not a bad center by any means, he had his struggles this season, and when he was hurt the Hornets had a hard time filling the void left by his absence. PJ Washington was employed at the center position at times and did a solid job, but his lack of size and strength was exposed by teams sometimes, meaning that this is not a viable option in the long term.
Bismack Biyombo, despite being a great veteran presence that Charlotte really needed, leaves a lot to be desired at both ends of the court. Vernon Carey Jr. and Nick Richards are two young centers waiting in the wings but neither is ready for extended minutes; Carey may be competing for the backup center job this upcoming season.
With Zeller and Biyombo becoming unrestricted free agents this offseason, the Hornets need to look at external options to upgrade the center position. This won’t come through the draft unless they traded up; USC’s Evan Mobley is the only legit lottery big option. This leaves free agency or trade as the avenues to fill the center spot.
Could the Hornets make another run at trading for Myles Turner?
Perhaps Mo Bamba becomes available for trade.
In free agency, Nerlens Noel or Richaun Holmes seem like the best options that will be available. The Hornets have also been heavily linked with Andre Drummond and Daniel Theis; Serge Ibaka would be another great option.
