The Charlotte Hornets own their own first-round pick and are owed second-round picks from the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Clippers. Over the next couple of months, leading up to the 2021 NBA Draft, Swarm & Sting will take a look at prospects hoping to hear their name called on draft night.

We’ve spent a good amount of energy focusing on players that may be available when the Hornets pick in the first round with the 11th overall selection, but now we turn the page to focus on a number of players who may still be on the board when Charlotte picks at No. 56 and 57.

College Stats/Awards

Greg Brown enters the 2021 NBA Draft after spending just one season at Texas. During the 2020-21 season, Brown played in 26 games, starting 24, and averaged 9.3 points and 6.2 rebounds while shooting 42% from the field.

Brown helped the Longhorns earn an NCAA Tournament appearance and he received All-Big XII Honorable Mention and Freshman Team honors.

Primary Strengths

Brown has great explosiveness, plays with great energy, and is extremely athletic. He is a solid rebounder and shot blocker. With good instincts and tons of room to grow, Brown could become an elite rim protector and shot blocker.

On offense last season for Texas, Brown spent most of his time scoring on lobs and on set jump shots. He has the potential to develop into a stretch player but will need to continue to work on his shooting mechanics.

Primary Weaknesses

Brown has decent length at 6’9 but will need to add much more build to his 206-pound frame and get stronger to last in the NBA.

Brown is early in his development as a shooter and decision-making on the floor. He needs to improve his shot from the mid-range and back, and his playmaking skills.

Brown plays with intensity on the defensive end but can be undisciplined. There isn’t anything that he does extremely well on defensive; he’ll need to improve his skills all-around.

Draft Projection

Brown is going to be a draft selection in the second round purely on potential. The difference between Brown and other players that are picked in either the first or second round in the past is that there isn’t really anything that you can put your finger on that Brown excels at.

Brown is a great athlete and plays with great energy; he’ll make energy plays, grab rebounds, and get a block for a team each game right now, but he still needs a lot of work. Another season at Texas would have been good for Brown.

The draft lottery will be held on Tuesday, June 22 on ESPN. The 2021 NBA Draft will be held on Thursday, July 29 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The draft will be televised on ABC (first-round only) and ESPN.
