Charlotte Hornets: Best defensive lineups James Borrego should use next season
LaMelo Ball, Scottie Lewis, Kelly Oubre Jr., Miles Bridges, JT Thor
A lot of this lineup fringes on Ball’s growth as an on-ball defender. If he doesn’t show much growth as an on-ball defender, this lineup isn’t worth much consideration. Also, this lineup seems more realistic than the previous lineup as four out of these five players should see quality playing time – Lewis being the odd man out. Furthermore, if Ball becomes stronger and enhances his ability to position himself and play angles correctly, Ball could become better defensively. He already has shown great instincts off the ball in passing lanes getting steals and makes adequate rotations as a help defender.
Lewis was drafted to bring defense and depth to the wing. Lewis is a fantastic athlete with a 7’0 wingspan. To indicate his type of foot speed and athleticism, Lewis tested first in the NBA Draft Combine amongst all players in the lane agility drill, according to NBA.com. Lewis hangs his hat on the defensive end with his high motor and lateral quickness. His future as a player comes down to his offensive skill and if he can become a reliable shooter to warrant playing time. If so, Lewis would be a good wing defender to add to the rotation. Lewis combined with Bridges and Oubre in this lineup would present a lot of defensive versatility and athleticism on the perimeter.
Thor is another developmental big like Kai Jones who has a ton of potential defensively. Thor is quick for a big man and has decent lateral quickness at the center position. Thor also averaged almost 1.5 blocks per game and 1 steal per game at Auburn this past season, according to Basketball-Reference. This can be attributed to his shot-blocking timing, his 7’3.25” wingspan, and a 35” vertical, according to NBA.com. His wingspan measured as the 2nd longest throughout the combine as well. All of the tools are there for Thor to shine defensively; athleticism, length, and shot-blocking instincts.
