With the news dropping Thursday morning that the Charlotte Hornets will be signing guard Terry Rozier to a four-year, $97 million extension, opinions from fans all over social media seem to be very split on the deal.

There’s no question that Rozier would need a new deal soon with his three-year deal, which he signed after being traded to Charlotte in 2019, expiring after this season. But with the franchise set in stone for LaMelo Ball to be the team’s point guard of the future, and drafting shooting guard James Bouknight with the 11th overall pick in this year’s draft, giving Rozier around $25 million per year hasn’t sat well with some Hornets fans.

The deal will eat up most of a large amount of cap space that Charlotte would have had for next year’s free-agent class and it also leaves questions on whether you can bench Rozier anytime soon if Bouknight ends up playing like a future star.

However, the deal actually keeps the Hornets right track for their current rebuild that is more ahead of schedule than many would have predicted.

After missing the playoffs five straight seasons, this extension shows that the Hornets are tired of losing and ready to get back into the postseason.

Let’s take a look at three reasons why Rozier’s new deal could actually benefit Charlotte’s timeline.
