Charlotte Hornets: Four players that need to step up this season
Four players who need to step up: Gordan Hayward, Forward, Charlotte Hornets
When Gordan Hayward was on the court last year, he was without a doubt the best player on the Hornets. Unfortunately, he only played in 44 games last year, missing the last 25, including the play-in game vs Indiana.
Hayward’s production on the court isn’t a problem and don’t expect it to be this year. However, he needs to be on the court, simple as that.
Avoiding injuries has been an issue for Hayward since his gruesome ankle injury during the Celtics opener in 2017. Charlotte cannot afford for their $30 million man to miss a significant amount of time again, especially games in the post-season if they qualify.
The team will lean heavily on Hayward’s play this season. Keeping him healthy and rested is crucial for the success of the Hornets. This is why the addition of Oubre made sense for Charlotte.
Playing Hayward 34 minutes a game this year will only gas him out and increase his risk for injury just like it did last year. Oubre subbing in to relive Hayward will take a massive load off his shoulders, giving him fresh legs when he steps on the court.
When Hayward is on the court, expect to see the efficiency we are used to. Let’s just hope he can stay healthy.
