Charlotte Hornets: Ranking the past 10 ROTY winners
By Jason Huber
As LaMelo Ball begins his sophomore season with the Charlotte Hornets, he has a lot of expectations coming his way after a stellar rookie season that won him the league’s Rookie of the Year award despite missing almost 20 games to injury.
Charlotte Hornets: Ranking the last 10 Rookie of the Year winners
Drafted third overall in last year’s draft, Ball would have run away with the award, even more, had he not gotten injured because he proved to be the best rookie in the league by a large margin.
Ball became the first Charlotte rookie to win the award since Emeka Okafor did so in 2005 and he was just the 12th rookie in NBA history average at least 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals since the 1973-74 season.
In January, Ball became the youngest player in NBA history record a triple-double at just 19 years and 140 days old.
The future is bright for the young point guard and the Hornets should be ecstatic with his talent level.
The hype is real and as Ball puts Charlotte more on the national map, it has us wondering, where does Ball rank among the last 10 players to win Rookie of the Year?
Here is a breakdown of the last nine winners before Ball in three tiers: The average, the decent and the best.
Then, on the last slide, I’ll reveal which tier Ball’s rookie season is in.
The rankings are based on how each player performed during their rookie campaign and not their overall career.
