Charlotte Hornets: Ranking the last 10 ROTYs – The Average

Malcolm Brogdon (2017), Michael Carter-Williams (2014), Andrew Wiggins (2015)

Out of these three ROY winners, Malcolm Brogdon had by far the worst campaign as a rookie, averaging just 10.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.2 points per game for the Milwaukee Bucks.

All of the rookies in 2017 just happened to play below average, allowing Brogdon to pull away from the competition. His rookie season might be one of the worst among every winner over the past 20 years.

Fortunately for Brogdon, his career has continued to excel since that average rookie year. He’s seen his scoring average increase every season, signed with the Indiana Pacers in 2019, and is coming off his best season in the league.

Michael Carter-Williams happened to be in one of the worst draft classes of all time and fellow rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo was nowhere close to his current level.

Carter-Williams did average a decent 16.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.9 assists as a rookie, which puts him in the same statistic category as LaMelo’s rookie campaign but a lot of the stats were padded due to him playing on a horrible Philadelphia 76ers team. He had a putrid 1.3 win-share.

Finally, everyone remembers how hyped up Andrew Wiggins was heading into the 2015 NBA Draft and he quickly failed to meet expectations and has continued to do so until this day.

Wiggins was also in a very disappointing draft class and won the award by averaging 16.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists on 43 percent shooting. He had a poor 2.1 win-share.
