Charlotte Hornets takeaways: LaMelo Ball is a franchise player

Last season as a rookie, everyone saw the potential that point guard LaMelo Ball had as he was named Rookie of the Year despite missing a handful of games due to a broken wrist.

Ball came to Charlotte not having a full offseason due to COVID, playing in front of no fans and having to work his way up the chain of trust with head coach James Borrego.

Right when Ball began to come into his own, the wrist injury happened and it set him back a bit. He finished the season strong but the question remained this offseason about whether he can live up to the high expectations he gained.

Well, if Wednesday’s season-opener showed anything, it’s that not only will he live up to the expectations but he’ll exceed them.

Ball scored 31 points with seven 3-pointers, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists as he helped spark the Hornets major comeback.

Fans at Spectrum Center began chanting ‘MVP’ in the third quarter and it brought chills to many lifelong Charlotte fans.

After going through some rough times and seeing their franchise player Kemba Walker walk away two years ago, the Hornets seem to have found their new star player. And not only will he be the franchise player, but he has the ability to be a superstar.
