Charlotte Hornets: 3 reasons to upgrade the center position
Charlotte Hornets reasons to upgrade at center: It’ll give the young guys time to develop
Adding another guy into the center rotation will give the four young guys on the roster more time to grow and develop.
None of the young centers on the roster are ready for NBA minutes. They are all projects. Carey and Thor are already in Greensboro and Jones only sees action in garbage time.
Richards has gotten the run as Plumlee’s backup with Washington is out. I will admit he has played better than I thought he would, but he still is a liability on offense and often looks lost on defense, especially in transition.
Head coach James Borrego likes what Richards has shown so far, but he knows Richards is still developing and needs to grow.
"“Nick has been productive,” Borrego said. “And I think for his growth and development you need time. You’ve got to get some reps to continue to grow and develop to see ultimately what Nick can be. None of us know what he can become.”"
Adding an extra body at center, who has experience, can take a load off of Richards and give him the opportunity to continue his development. If they bring in a guy with a similar playstyle as Richards, learning how to play his game at an NBA level will come quickly to him.
Richards could continue to grow in practice and see some game time sporadically, but the amount of play he has seen to start this season is too much and it is costing the team.
The Hornets do not need to be too ambitious in adding a center, but they need someone to hold the fort down to give those young guys time to grow.
