The Hornets had several noteworthy victories this season as they took down such contenders as the Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and Philadelphia 76ers. The win over the Warriors stands out, as a sold-out crowd that included North Carolina native J. Cole watched the Hornets take down Charlotte native Stephen Curry and the visiting Warriors. The Warriors entered the game with a league-best record of 11-1 but were outdone from three-point range, knocking down just 23% of their attempts compared to 39% for the Hornets.

The team’s biggest win of the season came during their best three-game stretch of the season. In January, the Hornets beat the Milwaukee Bucks I two straight games, then followed that up by going to Philadelphia and beating the 76ers. The 76ers have owned the Hornets in recent years, with Joel Embiid making a hobby of bullying the Hornets in the paint. While Embiid did have 31 points, the Hornets managed to win the rebounding battle and held every other 76ers player under 20 points. It was the team’s high point of the season. If only it lasted.

It must be the win in Philadelphia. This win capped off an impressive four game win streak that saw the Hornets blow out the Detroit Pistons, win back-to-back games against the Milwaukee Bucks and then break their 16-game losing streak to the Philadelphia 76ers. Charlotte was 23-19 after this game, and it was the first time I honestly thought they had a legitimate shot at making the playoffs. Unfortunately, that did not happen, but it does not take away from this victory.

I thought the Hornets were going to win the NBA Finals after they won in Brooklyn against the Nets last month. Seemingly every Hornets player stepped up in that game, which Charlotte won 119-110. At the time, it was the most important game of the season, and secured the season series and the tiebreaker against the Nets. LaMelo Ball showed everything that you want in a superstar point guard,  while P.J. Washington made numerous impact plays down the stretch. The Hornets contained Brooklyn’s stars about as well as anyone can hope to.
