Justin Minaya just finished his five-year college career that included stints at South Carolina and Providence, where he was a graduate transfer and competed in a Sweet 16 last season. This will be Minaya’s first appearance in the NBA Summer League after going undrafted.

What Minaya brings from an offensive standpoint is some perimeter shooting and decent feel for the game. Minaya was used as a corner three-point shooter and scored on put-backs around the rim. Improving as a three-point shooter will be crucial for his success at the next level. He ranked in the 38th percentile on three-point shots and 32nd in catch and shoot scenarios last season. Since Minaya does not have much ability as a shot-creator, je will have to be a reputable shooter to stay on the floor. Mechanically, his shot has promise. He has a stable base and has good balance on his shot. However, there are inconsistencies at times with his release. He sometimes will dip the ball before getting into his shooting motion and his body will not be square towards the rim. Overall, Minaya has the mechanics to be a decent shooter and has decent vision as a passer, especially in high-low scenarios with good post scorers.

The appeal with Minaya comes on the defensive end of the floor. He was superb defensively this last season, where he ranked in the 91st percentile in overall defense and 86th in isolation scenarios. Opponents only shot 28% on field-goal attempts when he was the primary defender last season. Minaya also graded in the 74th percentile against pick and roll handlers last season. He has shown the ability to switch onto guards or play against forwards in the post. He has a strong frame and decent lateral quickness, which helps him contain the ball on drives. Minaya can protect the rim well for a forward, averaging about 1 block per game last season.

Overall, Minaya’s ability to switch on defense and his intensity on the defensive end are two of his most appealing traits. If he can become a consistent shooter, he has a chance to become a more intriguing prospect, but significant progress must be made on offense for him to get a true opportunity at the next level.
