Four free agent point guards the Hornets could sign
Frank Jackson
Frank Jackson has a few ties to the state of North Carolina. He attended Duke University for his lone freshman season and decided to enter the NBA draft. At Duke, he averaged 10.9 points per game, with 2.5 rebounds per game and 1.7 assists per game.
In the 2017 NBA Draft, Jackson was actually selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 31st pick in the second round. The Hornets traded him on draft night to the New Orleans Pelicans for cash considerations.
Jackson did not play at all in the 2017-2018 season as he suffered a couple of injuries that would keep him out his entire rookie season.
In his first healthy NBA season for the Pelicans, he appeared in 61 games and started in 16 of them. He averaged 8.1 points per game with 2.2 rebounds per game and 1.1 assists per game.
After being waived, in 2020, Jackson would eventually sign a two-way contract with the Detroit Pistons. After the 2020-2021 season, Jackson signed a two-year extension that included a team option. Detroit declined the team option for Jackson for 2022-2023, which made him an unrestricted free agent.
This past season, Jackson had his best season as a pro, averaging 10.6 points per game with 1.0 assist per game and 1.8 rebounds. He shot 40.2 percent from the field while shooting only 30.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Jackson is still a young player and has the ability to score the basketball which the Hornets need from a backup point guard. Signing Jackson would be doable from a financial standpoint as he wouldn’t command the same amount of money that a Dennis Schroder type player would.
