The Charlotte Hornets ended the preseason the way they began it, dropping tonight’s contest against the Philadelphia 76ers to finish preseason at 0-5.

Gordon Hayward led the way for the Hornets in his second game back from injury, registering 16 points and seven rebounds on 6/10 shooting in 24 minutes of action.

Joel Embiid led the way for the 76ers, posting 19 points and six rebounds on 8/17 shooting in 23 minutes.

What went well for the Charlotte Hornets?

Cody Martin had a strong performance in his first preseason action. After missing the team’s first four games due to knew tendinopathy, Martin had eight points and five rebounds in just 12 minutes, recording a game-high +13 plus-minus.

Mason Plumlee was able to play after exiting Monday’s game early due to injury. He had six points, six rebounds, and a team-high five assists and made all four of his free throw attempts. He recorded a plus-minus of +9, the best among Charlotte’s starters.

Terry Rozier did an adequate job of filling in at point guard, recording four assists and just one turnover.

James Bouknight scored 11 points after scoring 16 points combined through the first four games. He shot 4/8 from the field and 3/6 from three-point range.

What went poorly for the Charlotte Hornets?

Playing without LaMelo Ball, the Hornets struggled with ball security to the tune of 23 turnovers, the most they have had in any of their five preseason contests. Their second-most turnovers came during Monday’s game against the Washington Wizards during which Ball was originally injured. Charlotte committed 19 turnovers in that game.

Charlotte also failed to close yet another close game. After losing their first two preseason games by 41 and 25, respectively, the Hornets dropped their final three contests by nine, nine, and five. While they certainly performed much better in the final three games, the inability to win close games could plague a team that infamously went 0-7 in overtime games last year.
