The Charlotte Hornets earned a hard-fought victory in front of their home crowd on Saturday  night, defeating the Golden State Warriors in overtime by a final score of 120-113.

What went right for the Charlotte Hornets?

P.J. Washington’s breakout performance

P.J. Washington had been dubbed by many as the most obvious “breakout candidate” for the Hornets entering this season. Washington showed up in a major way in tonight’s contest, as his 31 points is now the most in a game by any Charlotte player this season. Tonight was also the second-highest scoring performance of Washington’s career, as 13/23 (56.5%) shooting led to an efficient night for the fourth-year forward.

Washington also secured all three jump balls that he was involved in during the overtime period, leading to crucial extra possessions down the stretch.

Hornets get the overtime monkey off their back

The Hornets’ recent struggles in overtime games has been well documented, and these issues continued earlier this week with an overtime loss to the New York Knicks. Charlotte had lost 10 consecutive overtime games dating back to February 1st, 2021, notably going 0-7 in overtime games during the 2021-22 season. The Hornets have a tendency to find themselves in overtime games, as they have now appeared in 12 such contests dating back to the 2020-21 season, tied for the third-most of any team in that time.

What went wrong for the Charlotte Hornets?

Technical fouls an issue yet again

The Hornets committed two technical fouls, one each for Kelly Oubre Jr. and Nick Richards. The Warriors took advantage and converted both of the technical free throw attempts. While Charlotte held on for the win, the margin between victory and defeat is often slim in the NBA and giving the opponent additional points can be costly. The Hornets know this all too well, as a technical foul assessed to Oubre during the overtime period of Wednesday’s game against the Knicks proved to be critical in the Hornets’ defeat.
