Hornets can’t hold halftime lead, lose fifth straight game

The Charlotte Hornets lost for the fifth time in as many games, falling to the Washington Wizards on Monday night by a final score of 108-100.

P.J. Washington led the Charlotte Hornets with 25 points while Kyle Kuzma led the Washington Wizards with 20 points of his own.

With the loss, the Charlotte Hornets are now 3-8 on the season and has now lost seven of its last eight games.

What went right for the Charlotte Hornets?

Offensive rebounding 

The Hornets corralled 17 offensive rebounds, their most in a game this season. It was a team effort, as seven players registered at least one offensive rebound, with Mason Plumlee’s seven offensive boards leading the way.

Another strong night from P.J. Washington 

P.J. Washington’s had 25 points on 61.1% shooting and was the only Charlotte player to make more than one three-point field goal. Washington has now scored at least 25 points on three occasions this season after having done so just five times before this year.

What went wrong for the Charlotte Hornets?

Three-point shooting

The Hornets shot just 15.6% (5/32) from three-point range, their worst three-point percentage of the season and the third-worst three-point percentage by any NBA team in a game this season. Terry Rozier, Kelly Oubre Jr., Dennis Smith Jr., JT Thor, and James Bouknight all had their worst individual three-point shooting performances of the season tonight.

Third quarter woes 

Leading by two points after an impressive second-quarter rally, the Hornets were outscored 30-24 in the third period and were never able to reclaim the lead afterwards. Charlotte has now been outscored by a total of 36 points in the third quarter this season, the fifth-worst mark in the league. The Hornets have been outscored in seven of their eleven third quarters so far this season.
