After a 2022-23 season filled with turmoil,  the ability of Steve Clifford to be a head coach in the NBA was called into question. Despite the poor outcome of the season, Clifford did introduce several positive aspects to the team. Unfortunately, next season may be his last chance to prove he is an NBA-caliber head coach. Here’s how he can do that.

1. Trust his lottery picks.

In the 2022-23 season, Mark Williams was held out of the lineup for several weeks and months. After being inserted into the starting lineup, Williams immediately elevated the Hornet’s offense and defense. This season, the Hornet’s success will partially hinge on the performance of Brandon Miller. Due to this, the coaching staff must make Miller’s development and playing time a priority. Miles Bridges, LaMelo Ball, Williams, and Miller will be the franchise’s primary centerpieces moving into the future, and their development must be a priority.

2. Lead this unit to a top-15 defense.

Steve Clifford has a reputation as a defensive coach. He’s also shown that he can coach a defense beyond its ability. Clifford led the Orlando Magic to a solid defense in the 2018-19 season. A unit ranking fifth in the NBA in opponent points per game, with Nikola Vucevic as the starting center. While Vucevic is a very good player and a high-end center in the NBA, it comes from his offensive contributions rather than his defensive skills. With the center position being the most important defensive position in basketball, it’s very impressive that the Magic had as good a defense as they did with Vucevic.

The personnel on this Hornets roster is primed to have a top-fifteen defense in the NBA. Miles Bridges, Brandon Miller, and Mark Williams will provide a good front-court trio to spearhead the defense. That is before mentioning the returning P.J. Washington. There’s no excuse for the Hornets to have a bottom-half defense.

3. Player growth.

Throughout his career, Steve Clifford has shown proficiency in developing players. Clifford played a role in developing Kemba Walker, Nikola Vucevic, Markelle Fultz, Jonathan Isaac, and Cole Anthony. With as much talent on this Hornets roster, there must be serious strides taken this season. For example, LaMelo Ball will need to improve as an inside finisher, Mark Williams will need to showcase an expanded offensive game, and Miles Bridges will need to show an improved outside shot. This also partially falls on the shoulders of the assistant coaching staff, but as the head coach, the responsibility ultimately falls to Clifford.

This is truly a make-or-break season for not only Steve Clifford but also for Mitch Kupchak. For them to retain their positions in the NBA, this season must be a success. Ownership made it clear they want success as soon as possible, and that could mean changes if that does not happen. This season requires selflessness, accountability, and for everyone to buy into the vision of success.
