Five players signed past their prime in the second Hornets era
Ramon Sessions 2016
In need of a veteran point guard behind Kemba Walker, the Charlotte Hornets decided for a second go around with Ramon Sessions. Sessions played for the then-Bobcats from 2012 into early 2014 before being traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in a deal that saw Luke Ridnour and Gary Neal come to Charlotte.
Sessions returned to Charlotte to play for the now Hornets after appearing in all 82 games as the primary backup to John Wall in Washington. Looking to recreate that dynamic, the Hornets brought Sessions back to Charlotte.
Round two did not go as well for Sessions in Charlotte as he averaged then career-lows over a single season in points (6.2), assists (2.6), rebounds (1.5), and minutes (16.2) in 50 games. Unfortunately, his Hornets return did not end well, as Charlotte finished 11th in the Eastern Conference 36-46 record. Sessions would play one more season after 2016-17, splitting 28 games between the New York Knicks and Washington Wizards.
At just 30 years old, much more was expected from Sessions’ second stint with the Hornets. When looking back, it is not a surprise to see how things unfolded. The fact that Sessions only played in 28 more NBA games after leaving Charlotte makes it just a little bit easier to understand why the steep decline happened.
