The remote possibility of the Charlotte Hornets landing Tyler Herro via trade from the Miami Heat has apparently come to an end. This comes after the Heat were unable to agree to terms on a deal for Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard. Instead, Lillard is headed to Milwaukee while the Heat are left to deal with the fallout from their highly publicized pursuit.

The Hornets were named as a team that could be interested in Herro’s services should another team be required to facilitate a deal between Portland and Miami for Lillard. With Lillard joining Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, there is no longer a need for the Heat to deal Herro, and Charlotte has no chance of landing the young guard unless a different multi-team deal for another star comes to the table.

What is unfortunate from Charlotte’s point of view is that Herro could have been a good addition to the current foundation they are building. At just 23 years old and under contract through the 2026-27 season, this would have aligned well with the current state of the Hornets’ franchise. The prospect of having two young players in Herro and LaMelo Ball under contract would have allowed the team to build the rest of the team accordingly.

One potential positive from not being able to land Herro as the facilitating team in this deal is that Charlotte’s timeline is not sped up unnecessarily. Building a team properly for a franchise like the Hornets is a process that must be handled carefully. This is a team that is still a few years away from being truly competitive, and being over-aggressive in the team-building process can have catastrophic results.

Now that the prospect of potentially according Herro from Miami is off the table, Charlotte must turn focus toward their current players on the roster, as well as players who could also be on the move after Lillard’s trade to the Bucks has been completed. Perhaps the Hornets can find their way into another trade somewhere down the line, but it appears that any type of major move may have to wait.
