Hornets named ideal landing spot for veteran wing
The Charlotte Hornets are a very young team coming off a season that saw near across-the-board struggles. As a result, Charlotte is not viewed as a premier free-agent destination, which leads to having to find bottom-of-the-barrel options, even with the start of the regular season right around the corner. One player that is currently a free agent that could make sense for Charlotte? Terrence Ross.
The Hornets were recently named as an ideal landing spot for Ross in a recent Bleacher Report article. Author Adam Fromal would note Ross’s struggles upon landing in Phoenix before identifying Charlotte as a possible landing spot.
"“Ross isn’t likely to land with another true contender after joining the Phoenix Suns on the buyout market and struggling. But hopping aboard a team on the rise that could use veteran leadership and shooting improvements seems like his best non-overseas route.”"
A possible addition of Ross to the current version of the Hornets would at least be intriguing. The 32-year-old veteran is a career 36.2% shooter from three-point range. Fromal did mention that Ross struggled from deep during the 2021-22 season. Ross would make just 29.2% of his attempts that season, the only year in his career in which he failed to eclipse the 30% mark. Ross did improve this past season (36.8%), increasing his conversion rate from deep closer to his career mark.
When evaluating the current state of the Hornets roster, two things stand out. First off, they could really use a player with his track record from three-point range. Additionally, there may be some difficulty finding a way to get him enough minutes with the current roster construction. The Hornets already have their fair share of players who will see plenty of time on the court. This creates some difficulty in finding a way to get Ross minutes should he end up in Charlotte. However, there is the possibility that one or more players could be removed from the equation, such as trading Gordon Hayward and the uncertain status of Miles Bridges moving forward. If a roster spot becomes open, Charlotte would be wise to consider bringing Ross aboard. If not, they may be better off rolling with what they have and keeping things as-is until the trade deadline.
