Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford sat down and spoke with Hoops Hypes’ Michael Scotto. A variety of topics came up, but it is Clifford’s belief in point guard LaMelo Ball that was particularly notable. After complimenting Ball’s rare combination of size and athleticism, Clifford would state how highly the young is viewed.

"“I think, obviously, our vision for him (Ball) is to be the elite point guard in the league or one of the two or three best point guards in the league, which he obviously has the talent to do. He has the work ethic to do it.”"

Becoming an elite guard who is among the top three at the position is a very lofty goal. But if anyone is capable of taking that step, it is Ball. The physical aspects of Ball are not something that can be taught. Additionally, Ball is able to play the game with a certain level of athleticism that few players his size possess.

When asked about drawing a comparison between Ball and another player, Clifford was not able to come up with an answer. Even for someone with as much experience and familiarity with how the league has grown during his time as a coach, Clifford struggled to come up with an exact answer.

"“I’m trying to think of somebody at his size and his speed who can play in the open court and shoot with the range like he can. I really can’t think of anybody that would come to mind. I think last year, for instance, there were only five guys that were efficient shooting off the dribble from above the break, and he only played 36 games, but he’s one of those guys. If you watch him when he does his routine when he works out, he’s a great shooter.”"

What it is all going to come down to is whether or not Ball can live up to his potential. This is not a question of talent but rather a question of health. Ball has appeared in 52 or more games just once in his career, as injuries seem like they could be a very large obstacle throughout his career, just like his older brother Lonzo. His ability to stay healthy will ultimately determine his ceiling, chances of being an elite NBA point guard, and whether or not his time in Charlotte will be remembered fondly down the line.
