Signing veteran big man could help Hornets’ bench unit
There are a handful of veteran free agents still available that could be of interest to teams looking to reach a level of being more competitive, a status that the Charlotte Hornets are looking to attain. This is why it is not exactly surprising to see them linked to an intriguing free-agent addition.
Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz identified a few landing spots for veterans who remain unsigned. Charlotte’s entry into the list has them bringing in a nine-year veteran. That veteran? JaMychal Green. Swartz specifically notes that the Hornets need another big man on the roster who can shoot while also mentioning Charlotte’s difficulties from three-point range so far this season. The Hornets are one of the league’s worst three-point shooting teams and could certainly use a veteran big with Green’s track record from deep.
"“Green owns a lifetime mark of 36.8 percent from three and was even better with the Golden State Warriors last season (37.8 percent). The 33-year-old spent time at both power forward and center for Golden State while averaging 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds in 14.0 minutes, shooting 54.0 percent overall.”"
This type of production would be a welcome addition to the Hornets. JT Thor and Nick Richards have not been particularly dazzling so far, averaging just 3.5 points per game each on a combined 5-13 (38.4%) from the field. Charlotte may feel inclined to make a move to bring in someone else should these numbers fail to improve.
There is a second part to this proposal from Swartz that needs mentioning, cutting ties with Miles Bridges. Bridges recently found himself in more legal trouble a few weeks ago, which appears to be a driving force here. Charlotte deciding to bring back Bridges after the legal issues that kept him off the court for all of last season was a move that garnered plenty of well-deserved criticism. Continuing to roster him after another incident makes the entire situation look that much worse. If the Hornets were to move on from Bridges, bringing in a veteran like Green could hopefully stabilize their roster and prevent everything from falling apart. But until they part ways with the former Michigan State Spartan, a move for Green seems unlikely at this time.
