3. The margin of victory and scoring average in wins versus losses

It is not exactly surprising to see a team’s average points scored in a loss being less than that of a win. But one would hope that these numbers would not fluctuate all that much.

In their three wins, Charlotte is averaging 121.7 points per game while giving up 117 to their opponents. Meanwhile, the Hornets are only managing to score 112.1 points while allowing 124 to their opponents in their seven losses. This is staggering.

Giving up more points in their losses than they score in their wins is not great, but is still expected somewhat. This is a Hornets team that is capable of giving up way too many points on a routine basis. The result is their 4.7 average margin of victory appearing to be microscopic when compared to their near 12-point margin of defeat.

The final score differential is slightly more than 2.5 times higher when losing compared to winning is deeply concerning. It is less about the seven additional points that their opponents are scoring but rather the near 9.5-point difference for the Hornets. Charlotte’s opponents averaging more points in games that result in losses for the Hornets at the current ratio does not bode well for the rest of the season. This organization is going to have to turn things around quickly in multiple areas if they are going to avoid being an afterthought yet again.
