The Charlotte Hornets are not expected to compete in 2025-26. Could they surprise the NBA world and make a postseason run? Anything is possible, but Charlotte is likely still a couple of years away from seriously contending. The Hornets are a better team with LaMelo Ball on the floor, but injuries have played an unfortunate role in his career. At this point, the team may be thinking about building around Brandon Miller for the future.
Since the Hornets likely won't compete for the playoffs this season, Charlotte could decide to tank and attempt to land a high draft pick. Bringing in a top prospect would allow the Hornets to give Miller another star alongside him for the future. With 2025 No. 4 overall pick Kon Knueppel also on the roster, landing a 2026 top pick would only enhance the Hornets' future.
LaMelo Ball's future in Charlotte with Hornets
It has yet to be determined what the future holds for Ball in Charlotte. If the Hornets were to trade him, they could potentially land a top five pick in the draft. Yes, Ball has dealt with injuries, but he is a star when healthy. LaMelo is also only 24 years old, so a contender could potentially keep him on their roster for years to come.
However, the Hornets could still attempt to land a high draft pick even if they keep Ball. Ball, Miller, Knueppel and a top pick in the 2026 draft would be especially impactful for the future. The Hornets need to decide if LaMelo Ball is still their guy. If he is not, one has to imagine that Brandon Miller will become the next face of the franchise.
Either way, the Hornets probably are not expecting to make a competitive run this season. As mentioned earlier, anything can happen. If Charlotte's young players all reach their potential and Ball stays healthy, then the Hornets could end up winning 40 or so games and emerging as a play-in contender. If injuries and underperformance play too common of a role once again, though, it would not be surprising to see this Hornets squad in the running to win the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery.
It will be an interesting year in Charlotte to say the least. Fans may be frustrated, but there does seem to be a franchise direction which is better than no direction at all. The future is promising as the Hornets continue their rebuild.
