Day 2 of NBA free agency was far more active than the first night, and the Charlotte Hornets even got in on the action, landing Josh Green in the trade that sent Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks, ending his tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
After weeks of rumblings, it seemed clear that Thompson wanted to be done in Golden State, and now, he joins a Mavericks team fresh off an appearance in the NBA Finals.
However, since the Mavericks didn’t have enough cap space to make the move, they needed another team to help facilitate the trade. That’s where the Hornets came in.
Full details of Hornets trade for Josh Green have been revealed, including Klay Thompson leaving Warriors for Mavericks
Charlotte got involved, landing Green, who projects to be an impactful player on the wing next to LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller due to his defensive prowess and improved three-point shooting.
While the deal was initially reported in the early hours of the afternoon, the full details were not finalized until later at night, as the Mavericks and Warriors were still negotiating on their end.
Now, the details have been finalized.
Hornets receive:
Josh Green
Mavericks receive:
Klay Thompson
Two second-round picks (via CHO)
Warriors receive:
2025 second-round pick (least favorable of Denver/Philadelphia)
2031 second-round pick
Wojnarowski reported that the Hornets would be throwing in two-second round picks in exchange for Green, but the exact years of the picks were not specified.
For Charlotte, Green will immediately provide a nice boost on the defensive side of the ball, and his underrated playmaking skills could prove useful on the other end as well.
At just 23 years old, Green is the exact type of player the Hornets should be taking a chance on as they look to plan for the future and build around Ball and Miller.
He will have a chance to play real minutes for the Hornets and could even take another step in his development as a player.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks land one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history in hopes of making it back to the Finals next year, this time, with a different outcome.
Golden State followed up the deal by signing now-former Philadelphia 76ers guard De’Anthony Melton to a one-year deal, though losing a franchise legend in Thompson cannot be overshadowed.
