It is clear and obvious that the Charlotte Hornets 2023-24 season is not going to be one of a competitive nature. This is a roster that outside a select few, is missing quality and complimentary players. Charlotte's focus should be on the future and working to surround their foundation accordingly. This means looking for younger players who are on the outs with their respective teams that can be acquired via trade before the rapidly approaching deadline. The good news for the Hornets is that one such player has become available, and it is one they should heavily pursue.

It has been mentioned that the New York Knicks could be looking to move 23-year-old guard Quentin Grimes in exchange for an upgrade. Grimes and head coach Tom Thibodeau do not appear to be compatible, and a mutual parting of ways appears to be inevitable. This is where the Charlotte Hornets should throw their hat into the ring and become involved in discussions for Grimes.

The Knicks have already looked into Hornets guard Terry Rozier, making the two sides natural trade partners. This is nothing against Rozier, but at nearly 30 years old, the much younger Grimes fits in better with Charlotte's competitive timeline. This is exactly how the Hornets need to operate. Identify that timeline (a few years from now) and find ways to build their roster to make that possible.

When it comes to fit, Grimes is an ideal addition for Charlotte. As a 3-and-D player, Grimes would help in two areas that the Hornets need most, three-pointers and defense. Charlotte is at or near the bottom of both areas (three-point shooting and defense), and finding a way to improve those two areas by swapping out Rozier for Grimes to play alongside LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller would be best for all involved.

The sooner the Hornets realize they are not built to compete this season or the next, the better their team-building process will go. Acquiring someone such as Grimes, in addition to others that fit his description, would help in their quest to properly build a competitive roster. It is about aligning complementary players with similar ages, and until that happens, it is hard to envision the Hornets winning consistently.
