After Ray McCallum‘s second 10-day contract expired, the Charlotte Hornets added backcourt depth as they signed Briante Weber to a 10-day deal.
According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, “Warriors free agent Briante Weber has agreed to a 10-day contract with the Charlotte Hornets.” This report comes just hours after Weber completed his second 10-day deal with the Golden State Warriors. The Charlotte Hornets needed to add backcourt depth with Ramon Sessions injured and Ray McCallum’s contract expiring.
Charlotte was previously linked to Briante but when they tried to sign him, he instead chose to join the Warriors. Two weeks later, the two sides meet once again as his contract expired and the Hornets are in need of a backup point guard. Weber will look to get some playing time and make an impact unlike McCallum as Ray wasn’t given a single minute by Steve Clifford during his two 10-day deals.
Briante was the top rated prospect in the NBA D-League this season during his time with the Sioux Falls Skyforce this year. The 6’2 guard averaged 16.5 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game and 7.4 assists per game. He shot 45.6% from the field and 35.9% from three as Weber recorded 11 double-doubles and five triple-doubles in 31 total games.

After going undrafted in the 2015 Draft out of VCU, Briante has bounced from around from the D-League and the NBA. He has appeared in games with the Memphis Grizzlies, the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors. While he hasn’t been able to stick with any one team, there is no doubting his talent and it is only a matter of time before the 24-year old makes a name for himself and finds a home.
In seven games with limited minutes, Weber averaged 1.7 PPG with the Warriors. That is below his NBA career average of 3.1 PPG that he has accumulated over the course of 14 games and two seasons. For his career, Briante is also averaging 2.1 RPG and 1.9 APG.
It will be interesting to see how the Hornets use him, if at all, during his 10-day contract. He will probably be signed to a second deal after this one expires but nothing is certain. Until Sessions returns, Brian Roberts will probably continue as the backup point guard to Kemba Walker. Maybe Weber can do enough to prove that he deserves that role and those minutes over the next few games.

With his skills, Briante Weber may be able to stick with the Charlotte Hornets for the remainder of the season, especially if he can show out and play well during his time in the Queen City. Brian Roberts hasn’t played particularly well as the backup so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the new signing get some run with the second unit.
