2. Cleveland gets another shooter
Marvin Williams has been a sniper this season, hitting an incredible 44% of his three-point attempts. However, his counting three-point down, averaging 9.4 points and 4.4 rebounds. The 31-year-old would not have a place on a rebuilding Charlotte franchise, so it makes sense to send him out to a potential contender.
Time for the Cleveland Cavaliers. They’ve loaded up their roster with savvy shooters since LeBron’s return to the land. What’s one more to the mix?
The trade? Marvin Williams for Iman Shumpert and Cedi Osman.
For Charlotte, they get some return on Williams before he ages too much. Williams contract comes off the books in three years, and Shumpert‘s comes off in two, so there’s some sooner cap relief in that regard as well. While Shumpert has been mediocre at best this season, Osman is an intriguing prospect. The Turkish swingman has played sparingly in the NBA, but is only 22 and has shown flashes overseas.
For Cleveland, they push that much closer to an all-important championship in LeBron’s final year of his contract. Williams has always been a hard-working stretch four in Charlotte, and should fit right into Cleveland’s locker room. He’ll be able to showcase his ball movement, shooting, and defensive skills in Cleveland. When it comes to matchups with the Warriors, he’ll be fine against their bench units. With a second unit consisting of Jose Calderon, Dwyane Wade, Kyle Korver, Marvin Williams, and Channing Frye, (don’t forget Derrick Rose, Jeff Green, and Tristan Thompson too) Cleveland would continue their push for a championship.
