Charlotte Hornets 2017-18 season grades: Kemba Walker
Walker received an “A+” grade last season. The fall to an A- this year is in part because of the team’s inability to improve their record but it’s mostly due to his inefficiency. Although he put up good stats, Kemba didn’t get any better and his numbers were down from last year. Hopefully, he can get his shooting stats back up next season and his three-point shooting over 40% for the first time in his career.
Kemba ranked 20th in the NBA in points per game, 11th in total points scored and fourth in three-point shots made behind only James Harden, Paul George and Kyle Lowry. He was also tied for ninth in free throws made. On top of all that, Walker racked up 2736 minutes played which was 11th most in the NBA.
Only two players in the league averaged at least 22 points per game and 5.5 assists while shooting 43% from the field and 38% from three. Kemba was one of them with the other being former NBA MVP Stephen Curry. (NBA.com)
With the records that he broke, Kemba cemented himself in franchise history. Walker is now the Hornets’ all-time leader in points scored as he passed Dell Curry this season. He also passed Dell for most three’s made. He sits first in free throws made, 20-point games (237) and 30-point games (56) as well.

Looking ahead, Kemba has one year left on his current deal. With trade rumors swirling, there’s a decent chance that Walker could be traded either this summer or before the trade deadline next season. The Charlotte Hornets may look to re-sign him to a max contract but they will need to win games and make the playoffs in order for their star player to stay.
