Following a Strong Year, How Will Frank Kaminsky Expand his Game This Season?
By Bryce Fields
We are less than a month away from the beginning of the NBA season, and it is time to take a look at who the Hornets will have. We last profiled Jeremy Lamb, and now it is time to see how an improved Frank Kaminsky can excel this year.
Of all role player on the Hornet’s roster, I believe Frank Kaminsky is poised to make the largest leap, for a couple reasons. After only scoring 7 points per game his rookie season, Kaminsky’s scoring went up to 11 points the next season, but not at the efficiency anyone would have liked. Finally, in his third season, he was able to put it all together. The stretch big-man only scored 11 points per game, but shot 43% from the field and 38% from behind the arc.
The lack of scoring can be attributed to the log-jam at his position, where now-Wizard Dwight Howard was taking up minutes. Now that he has moved on, Kaminsky will have more playing time and play a larger role on the team. He will definitely be in talks of getting a starting job, a job I believe he will win and excel in.
Kaminsky will play a vital role this year and is a huge factor in whether Charlotte is mediocre or in the middle of the playoff picture at the end of the year.
The vital years for Frank the Tank and the Hornets go hand-in-hand. Kaminsky is on the last year of his contract and will trying to step his game up to get paid in the off-season (whether it’s by the Hornets or someone else). He is a true stretch-big man that is best when shooting the basketball, but needs to improve to become better rebounding and defensively. I believe that as the starting power forward, he will do just that. Not the most physical player, he will be better suited as a shooter that doesn’t have to go down and bang with the big guys too often. He, along with other shooters in Jeremy Lamb, Nicolas Batum, and Marvin Williams, will space the floor for Kemba Walker, being a huge reason why the Hornets will be much better this year.
Predictions for Kaminsky’s 2018-19 season
- 16 points (on 41% from 3-point range) and 6 rebounds per game
Kaminsky is going to prove to be a great three point threat this year and make leaps toward being a great role player in this league. He already has a quality shot, but with more minutes and more opportunity, he is going to shine. Expect Kaminsky to have a very strong year and become a quality starter for the Hornets.
