While going through a tough stretch in January, the Charlotte Hornets finally look ready to start rebuilding this offseason with a good draft pick.

The Charlotte Hornets have struggled in the month of January by only winning a couple of games so far. While the Hornets have been fighting for the 8th seed for half the season, it’s easy to say that they’re now fighting for a top-5 pick in this year’s draft.

The Hornets have lost seven straight games, and it looks like the players are not playing as hot as they did at the beginning of the season, proving that Charlotte is ready for a rebuild.

More from Draft

As of now, the Hornets sit with a 15-30 record and have the fifth-worst record in the league. However, if the Hornets continue to play the that they are playing now, then the team could have the worst record in the league.

If the Hornets finish as one of the worst teams in the league, then they will have a high chance of acquiring a top-5 lottery pick in this year’s draft. To fans, getting a draft pick this high as been rare lately.

If fans remember, the last time that the Hornets got a top-5 pick was during the 2013 draft when the team selected Cody Zeller with the fourth pick. The Hornets also selected Michael Kidd-Gilchrist in the 2012 draft with the second pick.

Both of these players have underperformed for Charlotte, as they have not played as well as fans hoped they would. In their careers, Zeller has averaged 8.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, while Kidd-Gilchrist has averaged 8.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Looking back, the Hornets wish they would’ve had better luck with their lottery picks. With the bad season that Charlotte is having, they are poised to get a top-5 pick again.

The Hornets only had two top-5 draft picks during this past decade, and it would be nice if Charlotte could start this new one with a top pick. The 2020 draft class has many talented players that could help the Hornets’ young roster; fans should be encouraged by this.
