Thumbs Down: Defensive Breakdowns
In the game of basketball there are going to be times in a game where a team gets on a big run, the only hope is that the big run isn’t so big that it cannot be overcome. This was nearly the problem in the Charlotte Hornets game against the Miami Heat.
While the Hornets had a good game offensively, scoring a season high 129 points, they allowed the Heat to make a couple big runs. The first one came with three minutes left in the second quarter, allowing them to go on a 14-4 run. Thankfully the Hornets made a little run of their own to finish the quarter, only being down by 3 at the half.
The second big run was nearly the nail in the Hornets’ coffin. Right before the Hornets went on their big run to finish the game, the Miami Heat went on a run of their own. With over three minutes left in the game, the Heat ripped of a 12-3 run, leading the Hornets 111-101.
While Malik Monk and Devonte’ Graham saved the day with their impressive shooting, two big runs like that cannot happen if a team wants to make a deep playoff run.
