There have been debates on whether the Charlotte Hornets should have done more this offseason to strengthen their depth at center. However, the guy manning the sidelines, Charles Lee, appears to be content with the trio of Moussa Diabate, Ryan Kalkbrenner, and Mason Plumlee.

In an interview with sports radio station WFNZ, Lee expressed confidence in what the Hornets have at the five, asserting that they have a "good balance" and that they can "play a lot of different ways" in the 2025-26 campaign.

Naturally, some folks disagree with Lee's position. However, he's the one leading the team to war, so his opinion holds much more weight than those of outsiders to the organization. Hornets fans should also be thrilled to know that the young coach seems like he already has a plan for how to maximize the strengths of Diabate, Kalkbrenner, and Plumlee.

The Hornets faithful must put their faith in Charles Lee

The second-year head coach notably defended Charlotte's decision to sign Plumlee, a move that did not sit well with some of the franchise's supporters due to how his first stint with the Hornets fared. However, Lee highly values his adaptability, explaining that he has gotten used to being a starter and a role player. It's also likely that the 35-year-old vet is expected to be among those who will lead by example and through his professionalism.

Lee then went on to praise the younger Hornets centers, highlighting how Diabate has been one of the team's "great success stories."

Remember that Moose began his Hornets tenure on a two-way contract before earning a well-deserved standard deal. He has yet to see his salary for the 2025-26 campaign guaranteed. However, that is a no-brainer decision for the front office, especially since he has "continued to grow," as Lee put it. The tactician also emphasized Diabate's versatility and energy, qualities that Charlotte will certainly benefit from.

Kalkbrenner may start the regular season as the third-string center. But he has a potential pathway to becoming a valuable role player, as Lee likened him to Brook Lopez, whose well-documented transition into an elite rim protector and outside shooter made him the starting big man for an NBA champion. Incidentally, Lee was an assistant coach for the Bucks when Lopez helped the squad secure the title in 2021. So, maybe he can help turn the rookie into a younger version of the former All-Star.

So, it may be unwise to write off Charlotte based on its center rotation. Clearly, Lee does not see it as a weakness like many do.
