The Houston Rockets and Phoenix Suns sent shockwaves around the league (and right before Game 7 of the Finals, by the way) by reportedly agreeing to a trade that will send Kevin Durant to Texas. Details have yet to be finalized, but given that the teams don't project to have that much financial flexibility, the Charlotte Hornets can come in and serve as a trade facilitator.

It has been evident for a little while now that Charlotte should look to join any possible blockbuster deal this offseason. As it turns out, it already has the opportunity to do so.

Houston's surprising acquisition of Durant won't be that straightforward, as the Suns are several million over the second apron, restricting their options unless they shed some salary before the trade is finalized. Interestingly, former Hornets players Cody Martin, whose contract for next season is not yet guaranteed, and Vasilije Micic, whom the Suns have a team option for this summer, seem to be the best candidates to be released to get Phoenix under the apron.

Alternatively, Charlotte can reach out to its favorite trade partner this year or the Rockets by offering to take on some salary in exchange for minor draft capital.

Hornets must take advantage of their financial flexibility

It's unclear how exactly the deal will go down, with insider Jake Fischer reporting that it will likely be a straight two-team deal.

What we know so far, though, is that the Suns will be receiving Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 overall pick in this year's draft, and multiple second-round picks. How the Rockets fleeced Phoenix is incredible, although Mat Ishbia's club could probably bring in more assets by rerouting Green to another destination. However, it appears the Suns are intent on keeping the former No. 2 pick and building the roster around him, Devin Booker, and probably Nick Richards.

Still, since the deal cannot be officially completed before July 6, the details remain fluid. Just don't expect the Hornets to make an attempt at landing Green, which was suggested by Sports Illustrated earlier this week. Phoenix looks set on bringing the potential star to the fold, and a backcourt duo of LaMelo Ball and another offensive-minded guard is a scary thought for Charlotte's defense.

But with the Hornets still having some financial wiggle room, they could try to help Phoenix and Houston finalize the Durant blockbuster. Even just a second-round pick or two would be worth it for Jeff Peterson and company as they strive to be at the level where the Suns were four years ago and where the Rockets project to be next year.
