Reading the Charlotte Hornets' injury report every game day can be heartbreaking. For instance, they have six players listed as out in their Monday matchup against the Orlando Magic due to various ailments.

Arguably the most brutal is Grant Williams', as the veteran will have no choice but to sit out for the remainder of the season. It's unclear how the Hornets will respond to the development, although there are available free agents who can provide the team with reinforcement.

Perhaps the front office will opt to keep the roster as is, especially with two key big men (hopefully) close to returning to the floor.

Hornets fans get a huge update on Mark Williams and Nick Richards

According to the team, Mark Williams and Nick Richards are ramping up their recovery from their respective injuries by getting a rehab assignment with its G League squad, the Greensboro Swarm. The pair will practice with the crew, which should signal how close the centers are to suiting up for the Hornets.

The most anticipated return is Mark Williams'. He has yet to make his season debut. In fact, it has been nearly a year since he last played in an NBA game.

Some fans have expressed concern or frustration about the Duke University product's bout with injuries, especially since his latest ailment was supposed to be "nothing too serious." He said it himself late when news of his status got out. It has been nearly two months since then.

Hopefully, Mark Williams can return to form because Charlotte badly needs him. His rebounding prowess can help make up for the team's inefficient scoring, while his rim-running potential and rim-protection abilities will certainly help address its other weaknesses.

Richards had actually done well in his stint as a replacement starter. He was a chief reason the Hornets led the league in offensive rebounds early in the campaign. He also showed improvement on the defensive end by complementing his double-double averages with 2.4 blocks per contest.

Unfortunately, the fifth-year pro joined his teammates on the sidelines when he sustained a fractured rib cartilage after an on-court collision during the Hornets' matchup versus the Boston Celtics on Nov. 1.

The absence of Mark Williams and Richards has left Charlotte incredibly thin at the pivot. As a result, the coaching staff has called on the 39-year-old Taj Gibson, the undersized Grant Williams, and the still-developing Moussa Diabate to man the fort.

So, any positive update about the center duo is welcome.
