Joe Dumars update should silence Zion Williamson-to-Hornets buzz

Until recently, there have been some talks about how the Charlotte Hornets should find a way to acquire Zion Williamson. The jury's out on whether adding the oft-injured star would benefit the team. However, it may all be moot because the New Orleans Pelicans, under the new management of Joe Dumars, look set to move forward with him headlining the roster.

The Pelicans head of basketball operations has reportedly sought to "develop a relationship" with Williamson, spending time together and going as far as watching playoff games. Dumars also recently addressed the media, sharing how they have emphasized responsibility and accountability in their conversations.

So, it seems like the renowned executive is wasting no time in ensuring that Williamson wants to stay long-term in New Orleans. If that is indeed the case, mock trades featuring him are unlikely to come to fruition. That should be splendid news for the Hornets because it finally puts to rest the idea that they should trade for him, something several pundits have suggested.

Williamson is undoubtedly a talented player, and his primary skills appear to make him a great fit alongside LaMelo Ball. Imagine the pair running fastbreaks and keeping opponents on their toes whenever they execute pick-and-roll sets. His defense should also be a godsend for a club devoid of plus-defenders. Furthermore, the former Duke University product is a North Carolina native, giving the potential union with Charlotte a homecoming angle.

However, Williamson has just spent too much time on the sidelines, and his conditioning leaves a lot to be desired. Relying on him and Ball could end in a catastrophe for the franchise, especially since the Pelicans would likely demand a king's ransom from other teams who might be interested in trading for him.

Hornets have to spend their assets wisely

The Hornets have managed to amass a wealth of draft picks and young talent through shrewd roster moves and a bit of tanking in the 2024-25 campaign. Still, some people believe they are an established star away from becoming true contenders.

Team president Jeff Peterson has already expressed that he will one day cash in Charlotte's assets. Hopefully, it will pay off for the long-struggling organization.

The squad's fans will have to practice patience, though, and prepare to endure another possible losing season. On the bright side, it's better for the Hornets to sacrifice a bit more than to mortgage their future in a high-risk, high-reward star like Williamson.
