Mock drafts for the Charlotte Hornets have been all over the place, but we may have just gotten a subtle clue that narrows their focus. Kon Knueppel, appearing on The Dale Jr. Download with Dale Earnhardt Jr., spent a good amount of time talking about one prospect in particular: Aday Mara.
While Knueppel mentioned a handful of names, Mara was the first player he brought up—and the one he described in the most detail. When Earnhardt Jr. asked which prospects would fit the Hornets, Knueppel didn’t hesitate:
“I like Aday Mara from Michigan a lot. I just saw his measurements. He’s huge. He’s 7’3” barefoot. 7’6” wingspan…like, that’s a big, big. I like watching him play."
Knueppel also mentioned Yaxel Lendeborg, Cameron Boozer, and Amari Allen, but none received the same level of detail or enthusiasm. And unlike Boozer who Knueppel said won’t fall to Charlotte, Mara is a realistic target at No. 14.
Is Aday Mara suddenly the Hornets’ real draft target?
Mara’s stock exploded on Day 1 of the NBA Combine after he measured 7’3” barefoot, 260 pounds, with a 7’6” wingspan and a 9’9” standing reach. These are Wembanyama‑level measurements, and they’ve pushed him firmly into the lottery conversation after weeks of uncertainty.
Knueppel also noted that he’s spoken with someone inside the Hornets’ front office about prospects. Boozer is out of reach. Lendeborg is still somewhat possible. Allen isn’t projected to go in the lottery. But Mara? It seems like he’s checking boxes for what the Hornets want.
Before the combine, Mara wasn’t even on my radar as a Hornets option. Now, with measurements this absurd and a skillset that’s genuinely unique, he’s almost certain to be a lottery pick. The problem: he likely won’t be there at No. 14.
If Charlotte truly wants him, they’ll have to trade up.
Or… is this all smoke and mirrors?
There’s also a chance this is misdirection. Draft season is full of smokescreens, and Jeff Peterson has been deliberate about keeping Charlotte’s intentions mostly quiet. Knueppel’s comments could be genuine insight, or they could be noise.
We’re still more than a month away from the NBA draft, and plenty can change. But for now, one thing is clear: Mara is officially on the radar of multiple teams, including the Hornets, and Knueppel’s comments may have given us our first real hint at Charlotte’s draft priorities.
As the draft approaches, the Hornets will continue to evaluate every option, but Mara’s sudden rise with Knueppel’s pointed praise adds a fascinating wrinkle to Charlotte’s plans. If Peterson believes Mara is the missing piece, Charlotte could be gearing up for an aggressive draft move.
