The Charlotte Hornets have gone about their offseason in the right way. They aren’t trying to rush anything, as they want to prioritize the development and maturing of their current young core.

Led by LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Miles Bridges, the Hornets have a very talented young core, and that’s without even mentioning big man Mark Williams and rookie forward Tidjane Salaun.

Charles Lee has seemingly made it his mission to implement a great culture in Charlotte, which, in turn, should set them up for lasting success rather than rushing into things.

However, the Hornets have apparently set their sights high. While it’s pretty clear that they don’t want to rush things, Miller believes that they should be a playoff team. At least, that’s what he told HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto during their interview. (H/t Bleacher Report)

Miller said that fans should expect the Hornets to be a playoff team next year, and while that was a great thing to say and is a nice goal to have, it could set fans up for disappointment.

Realistically speaking, the Hornets roster is talented enough to contend for a spot in the Play-In Tournament. And that could technically breed a playoff birth. But there are so many other playoff-caliber teams in the East.

The Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Miami Heat, and Indiana Pacers are all better teams than the Hornets. That’s already eight teams right there.

That said, injuries happen. And sometimes teams don’t live up to expectations. So, there is a world where the Hornets could sneak it. But that doesn’t even account for the other teams in the East.

The Detroit Pistons are looking to improve, the Toronto Raptors have an interesting young team, and nobody knows what the Atlanta Hawks are going to look like.

The only three teams that are definitively worse than the Hornets heading into the season are the Washington Wizards and Brooklyn Nets.

Obviously, it’s great that Miller has his sights set on the postseason. The Hornets should want to make the playoffs. But telling fans that they should expect Charlotte to be in the postseason is setting the bar very high.
