The Charlotte Hornets appear intent on developing their young talent, as evidenced by their lack of free agency moves this offseason. That might be the wise decision, as successful rebuilds usually take time to brew.
It's still too early to tell, but the organization has done well in bringing in a coaching staff that aligns fittingly with its collection of 23-and-under stars and aspiring stars. New coach Charles Lee has preached togetherness while ushering in a new era of Hornets basketball.
Wins could be scarce in the early going, so patience is definitely a virtue. However, it could be advantageous for morale if the team does not plummet too much in the standings.
Trading for Collin Sexton makes absolute sense for the Hornets
To field a competitive squad, Charlotte might have to address some roster holes. And Bleacher Report could be onto something when it suggested Collin Sexton as a trade target for the Hornets. Interestingly, it isn't the first time his name has been floated around in trade ideas for the franchise.
The former 2018 No. 8 draft pick is kind of in limbo right now with the Utah Jazz. Months ago, he was rumored to be available on the trade market. With Utah probably considering boosting its chances of getting the No. 1 selection in the 2025 draft, letting go of Sexton could be in its best interest.
The Hornets would be an ideal landing spot for "Young Bull" because of their need for a microwave scorer off the bench. Last season, they ranked 24th in bench scoring with 29.5 points per game. Of course, having a revolving door of starters and reserves may have played a part in that.
Still, Sexton could help in that department, having averaged 18.9 markers per contest for his career. His splits stats show that his scoring dips to 13.2 points per match when relegated to a bench role. However, his efficiency actually increases a bit as a reserve. So, the right offensive system might be what the 25-year-old guard needs.
It's worth noting that Sexton has primarily been a starter in his stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Jazz. Even so, he might be better off playing behind LaMelo Ball and whoever Lee starts at shooting guard if the veteran finds himself traded to Charlotte.
The good news, if such a deal pushes through for Sexton, is that he would still likely get plenty of playing time and even have the opportunity to step into a starting role again if Ball has to spend some days or weeks on the injury report.
