Many people thought the San Antonio Spurs have already decided on using their No. 2 pick on Dylan Harper. However, insider Michael Scotto dropped a recent bombshell that the Philadelphia 76ers, who own the third overall selection, have "engaged" with San Antonio to discuss a swap of picks.
If that's the case, the Charlotte Hornets have to make their own call to the Spurs and inquire about their asking price for their coveted spot in the draft order. While the Hornets have several options at No. 4, they probably would rather get the chance to acquire Harper, who has shown superstar potential.
Well, the dream target for Charlotte would have been Cooper Flagg. However, there hasn't been any indication that the Dallas Mavericks are willing to put their pick on the trading block. Harper wouldn't be a bad consolation for the Hornets.
Charlotte needs to make the call to San Antonio ASAP
It's unclear what the Spurs would demand in exchange for the right to choose a prospect right after the Mavs. However, they actually have a conundrum in their hands, as they already have playmakers De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle on the roster. Adding another guard who needs the ball in his hands to be effective on offense to the mix would give them a major headache. For that reason, it should have given Charlotte the go-signal to inquire about the No. 2 selection. With the Sixers having already reportedly done that, there's no reason for Jeff Peterson not to contact Gregg Popovich.
Harper wouldn't also be a seamless fit with the Hornets, especially since they already have LaMelo Ball running the show on offense. However, it's not hard to imagine the pair coexisting in the backcourt because of Ball's ability to play off the ball during some possessions. The coaching staff could also stagger their minutes, making sure that at least one of them is on the floor at any point of the game.
Drafting the Rutgers University freshman could also benefit Brandon Miller because it would take the pressure of creating shots off the rising star. Instead, Miller can focus on honing his off-ball offensive skills and attacking the paint only after either Harper or Ball has already broken down the defense.
Some LaMelo stans may not like it, but having Dylan in the fold would give the Hornets insurance in the event that they decide to move on from the 2021 Rookie of the Year.
The call to stop building around Ball has intensified this year following his failure to overcome injury concerns. His leadership abilities have also been put into question. However, it isn't that easy for Charlotte to just give up on one of its cornerstones. How often does a guy brimming with superstar potential who plays one of the most important positions arrive at the Queen City? But if Harper makes his way to the Hornets, trading Ball eventually could become an easier decision.
