The Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat may be the perfect trade partners for each other this summer. If the Heat decide to blow it up, the Hornets should be picking up the phone to try and acquire three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo.

Like the Hornets, the Heat had the same end result in the Play-In Tournament: home on the couch for the NBA playoffs. However, Charlotte is considered a rising team who overachieved this season, while the Heat have had mediocre seasons in the last three years.

In a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Simmons pitched a marvelous trade idea with the Hornets and Heat to Zach Lowe:

“Is Bam Adebayo on the table? I could offer you Bridges, and Grant Williams, I could give you your 2027 first back… Here’s everything I got give us Bam.”

There’s no denying the Hornets would be giving up a massive haul here, but that’s the price of doing business for an All‑NBA defensive anchor in his prime. You’re not just acquiring a Defensive Player of the Year–caliber player, you’re getting a big who isn’t a liability on the other end either.

Adebayo just broke Kobe Bryant’s record with an 83‑point eruption this season, the second‑highest scoring game in league history. He fills Charlotte’s biggest roster hole immediately, giving them the star center they’ve lacked for years — and one who can impact the game in almost every way.

Yes, LaMelo Ball and Adebayo had their big conflict recently, but that tension evaporates the moment they become teammates. Bam is a high‑IQ big with strong passing instincts, and pairing him with Ball would unlock offensive layers this team has never seen. The pick‑and‑roll becomes lethal, spacing improves, and the decision‑making is better. Everything gets easier.

Of course, Miami wouldn’t be short on suitors. Adebayo is the type of player who draws league‑wide interest the second he’s available. And after the chaos of the Hornets‑Heat play‑in game, it’s hard to picture these two franchises sitting at the same negotiating table. On top of that, Jeff Peterson may not be eager to part with two players and four first‑round picks this offseason.

Still, the Heat’s long‑standing refusal to tank only lasts until it no longer makes sense. At some point, every franchise has to choose between clinging to the middle or resetting before it’s too late. Living in lottery purgatory is the worst possible outcome.

Adebayo being a North Carolina native gives Charlotte a subtle but meaningful edge. In this scenario, the Hornets get the franchise‑changing big man they’ve desperately needed, and Miami gets its pick back from the Rozier deal plus the draft capital required to kickstart a rebuild.

Peterson will have plenty of ways to improve this roster in the offseason. A blockbuster like this would be a clear upgrade and one many Hornets fans would rally behind. But like any massive swing, it carries risk. Just ask the Clippers, who are still paying the price for the Paul George trade.
