In the postgame interview following the Charlotte Hornets’ win over the Miami Heat, LaMelo Ball addressed the play that sent Bam Adebayo to the locker room in the second quarter. Miami was forced to finish the night without Adebayo after the awkward fall triggered by Ball’s collision.
The sequence unfolded when Ball’s falling shot attempt was blocked by Simone Fontecchio. As Adebayo tried to save the ball near the sideline while balancing on one leg. Ball, who was also crashing to the floor, ended up grabbing Adebayo’s ankle. That contact caused Adebayo to lose his balance and land hard on his back, resulting in the injury.
LaMelo Ball issues an apology, but many aren’t convinced
Social media immediately erupted, with many fans interpreting the ankle grab as intentional. After the game, Ball offered a straightforward apology:
“I apologize on that one. I got hit in the head, didn’t really know where I was, but I’mma check on him and see if he’s okay and everything."
Ball doesn’t have a reputation for dirty plays, and given the speed of the moment and the fact he took a shot to the head, it’s hard to expect perfect awareness in real time. The optics were undeniably bad, and it’s surprising the play wasn’t reviewed, but there’s a reasonable case for giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Still, the apology didn’t land well with many viewers. A large portion of the basketball world labeled the play dirty, and Heat coach Erik Spoelstra even suggested Ball should have been ejected. That reaction may be excessive, but it reflects how bad the moment looked live.
Ball’s shot selection remains a problem
While Ball avoided punishment on the play, his nagging shot selection problem created its own issues. He finished a brutal 12-of-31 from the field and 2-of-16 from three. This was one of his roughest shooting nights of the season. Yet he still posted a plus/minus of +15, second only to the player of the game, Coby White.
Normally, a 2-of-16 night from deep sinks a team. If Ball hadn’t hit the overtime game‑winner, the conversation around him today would be far less forgiving. He was the definition of a double‑edged sword, providing positive impact in various moments but also being a detriment to the team with terrible shots.
The hope is that Adebayo’s injury is minor and that Ball becomes more aware in chaotic situations going forward. As for LaMelo, he’ll need to reset quickly and clean up his shot selection before the Hornets hit the road to face either the 76ers or Magic on Friday. The Hornets need their star guard in rhythm to get to the playoffs.
